nanowrimo 2012: writing dangerously edition

So I'm at T-minus two hours (or thereabouts) until NaNoWriMo starts for us Pacific Time Zone folks, and I still don't know what I'm writing.

It's kind of refreshing, actually. I'm usually all, "Oh, I need to plot the hell out of this, I have to make it perfect," and then things fall apart halfway through because I get between 25-30K into it and realize that nothing is going according to plan at all. This year, I'm running with more of a prompt than anything else, and I think I'll see where it takes me.

(For the curious, I think I'm going to write about an emergency room nurse (BECAUSE I MISS IT) who works at one of the few trauma centers in the country that's willing to admit patients of a supernatural persuasion. You know: zombies, werewolves, vampires, nixies, that sort of thing. I really have no idea where I'm going with it, but I think it will be fun)

Of course, working on NaNo means I'm going to be putting off fanfic, but given that right now I keep writing (a) really weird Dishonored stuff because I can't get that game OUT OF MY HEAD, and (b) a Twilight and Teen Wolf crossover in which Sheriff Stilinski and Charlie Swan are small town crimefighting bros who hook up or whatever. I...don't even know, I really don't.

However, I am so excited for Yuletide prompts to go out that I can't even stand it. *GRABBY HANDS*

(no subject)

I'm pretty jazzed that [community profile] yuletart is back this year. So many of the prompts are right up my alley that I'm going to have a hell of a time narrowing down my choices. I'm signing up for two pieces this time around instead of one -- in previous years I was working full time and doing my nursing prerequisites, so time was in short supply. This year? Good lord, if there's anything I have right now, it's time. Even if I do somehow manage to land a job in the next month or so, I'll still have more free time on my hands than I've had for the past four years. 12-hour shifts + no school = lots of free time for Kathleen.

I'm also thinking of doing Yuletide? I've never participated before but always wanted to, and I can definitely think of a few fandoms that I would give my left arm to see some fic for (*cough cough THE LAST LOVECRAFT cough*). But I also want to do NaNoWriMo this November, so...we'll see. I didn't even try for NaNo last year, since that was my first quarter working with Real! Live! Patients! on the trauma floor and I was determined to hang onto my 4.0 in pharmacology and pathophysiology, but this year? ♫ Tiiiiiiime is on my siiiide, yes it is

...and now that song is stuck in my head. Dammit.

Tomorrow I think I'll mail off my Washington nursing license application and maybe watch The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 again, because IT WAS SO GOOD OH MY GOD I THINK I LOVED IT MORE THAN THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. Carrie Kelley has always been one of my favorite Robins, and while I think my go-to old!Bruce will always be the one in Batman Beyond, this old!Bruce is pretty fucking awesome. And the animation is just...hnnnnnggggggh. So gorgeous. All of my love for the animation.

What's funny is that I reread the comic again after I watched it, just because I was curious about the changes, and I really like the alterations they made to the story structure and whatnot. It works well for a two-part film, with the Mutants and Two-Face as Act 1 and the Joker and Superman (I'm assuming) in Act II. I also like that they didn't have Bruce's inner monologue as a voiceover? Which is odd, because I generally prefer it when Batman is kind of bugfuck, but I think Frank Miller narration gets to be a little over-the-top when it's used as voiceover. The dialogue works well, but adding an inner monologue on top of that? Too much noir manpain for me. I can't take it seriously. And since Bruce Wayne is already the REIGNING KING of noir manpain...the changes are good, is what I'm saying.

it's also leaving me lots of time to knit

Now that I've had my nursing license for exactly (*counts on fingers*) three days, I am well and truly over this "unemployed new graduate" thing. Seriously. I know students from the previous cohort said it took an average of four to six months before they were hired somewhere, but I am impatient and my student loans are horrifying, and it has been well over a month since I last placed an IV.

I miss putting in IVs. Is that a weird thing to miss? I feel like that's a weird thing to miss.

Anyway.

The one nice thing about being unemployed is that I have loads of time to write. Oodles, even. Loads and oodles and LOTS. At the moment I have six stories going, most of them "Teen Wolf"-related because that show ate my goddamn brain. The first is a prequel to ain't that a kick in the head, because I wanted to do some worldbuilding from Derek's POV and figure out some of the behind-the-scenes stuff going on that universe. The second is a straight-up continuation of said story, because of reasons. Third story is based on this amazing gif-set, in which Derek is turned into the grumpiest of grumpy cats and hilarity ensues. Fourth story is basically my id being all, "Soooooo, current headcanon is that Derek Hale is basically starved for touch, let's detail all our thoughts on that!" and the fifth story is a Groundhog Day AU, because I FUCKING LOVE GROUNDHOG DAY AUs, OKAY, THEY ARE MY KRYPTONITE.

The sixth story is fanfic for The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu, because this is apparently how I watch obscure movies now: I ship two of the main characters like burning and then write fic that no one will read.

...well. Some people might read it. But it probably wouldn't make much sense, because...seriously, has anyone else alive seen this movie? I'm kind of in love with it. It's extremely silly and if the Amazon reviews are anything to go by, people who take Lovecraft way too seriously get kind of apoplectic over it, but I like to think I take Lovecraft juuuust seriously enough that this sort of movie makes my day. Also, it's slashy as hell. I mean. Oh my god. It's ridiculous how slashy this movie is, if by "ridiculous" you mean "awesome."

Which I do. I really, really do.
